Prime Minister Ted Choi didn’t think of it as a coup. That was a tawdry, unworthy name for the dramatic events he and others had set in motion.

A coup was something that changed governments. Ted Choi and his collaborators were going to change history.

With the eventual assassination of the people’s traitors, South Korea’s Si-min Shin and North Korea’s Yun-mi Kim, would come an end to all talk of ‘peace’. A line would be drawn through the endless war, yes, but not in the way the two traitors imagined it. The ‘demarcation line’ would become a real border. The DMZ would be replaced with a wall.

But more importantly, South Korea’s reliance on that vacillating puppet master, the USA, would end forever. A nuclear attack on US and South Korean navy forces in the Sea of Japan would sweep away all US reluctance to base nuclear weapons on South Korean soil.

But more than that. Under his leadership, South Korea would begin its own nuclear weapons program and within ten years, perhaps even five, South Korea would have a nuclear arsenal more powerful than that of the North.

His North Korean collaborators would also get what they wanted. Not a future as the poor cousin of the South, facing China across a new and much more dangerous DMZ. Instead, a return to the status quo; stability and security for the political and military elite and greater support from China than ever before.

Then, only then, would his nation know true peace. No longer bound to imperialist USA for its defense. No longer cowering under the threat of nuclear annihilation by North Korea or China. A prosperous, independent, powerful nation able to determine its own destiny at last!

And that future was close. So close.

All he needed was those damn launch codes.

Choi turned his attention back to the videoconference screen. “… and the result of the vote is six in favor, none against. Prime Minister Tae Hyun Choi is appointed interim Chief Executive of the State Council, Minister of Unification and President of South Korea. Minister of Agriculture, So-wa Yoon, is appointed interim Minister of National Defense.”

Choi had to stifle a smile. The hapless Agriculture Minister, Yoon, had just messaged him in panic. What should I do now? Call a meeting of the General Staff?

He had tried to calm her. I need you to focus on securing military support to the emergency and police services if needed. Arrange urgent meeting with the Director of Interior and Safety. Will call you after press conference.

Or in other words, “I need you busy doing something pointless so you do not get in my way.”

“… do you have any concluding words, Mr. President?”

Choi could not stifle the swelling in his chest. ‘Mr. President’. And had he not earned that title? He looked down the camera at the skeleton cabinet that he had just reconstituted. Of the 20-member cabinet, only 12 were not either dead, or in critical condition in hospital. None of the survivors were likely to challenge him in the coming hours or days; a flock of gormless sheep stared back at him.
